LESSON 9 : The 6th commandment

What is the sixth commandment of God?

The sixth commandment of God is: Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)

What are we commanded by the sixth commandment?

By the sixth commandment we are commanded to be pure and modest in our behavior.
I exhort you therefore, brethren, by the mercy of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice, living, holy, pleasing to God. (Romans 12:1)

What does the sixth commandment forbid?

The sixth commandment forbids all impurity and immodesty in words, looks, and actions, whether alone or with others.
But immorality and every uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becomes saints. (Ephesians 5:3)

What are the chief dangers to the virtue of chastity?

The chief dangers to the virtue of chastity are: idleness, sinful curiosity, bad companions, drinking, immodest dress, and indecent books, plays, and motion pictures.

What are the chief means of preserving the virtue of chastity?

The chief means of preserving the virtue of chastity are to avoid carefully all unnecessary dangers, to seek God's help through prayer, frequent confession, Holy Communion, and assistance at Holy Mass, and to have a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin.
Be sober, be watchful! For your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking someone to devour. (I Peter 5:8)

How do we keep the  6th Commandment

  • I am modest in all I do, in all I say, in all I listen to, and in all I look at.
  • We must be modest in our dress, in our words, and in our actions. God wants all children to have a clean heart. When our Mother Mary appeared to the 3 little children at Fatima in 1917, she told them that there are fashions (the way people dress) that are coming that will very much offend or hurt our Jesus.
  • We must be modest children. If a modest child sees a billboard or a magazine cover that is not modest, he looks the other way.
  • A modest child does not look up bad pictures or games on the computer.
  • A modest child does not listen to music that has impure or bad words.
  • Our world today is very immodest and impure and we need God’s help and our Mother Mary’s prayers to stay pure and holy.
  • The Sixth Commandment says we must be pure.
  • Every morning when you wake up, say an "Hail Mary" and ask Mother Mary to guard your purity.
  • Say no impure words and try to think no impure thoughts.
  • Pray to your Guardian Angel each night before going to sleep to protect you and guide you.
  • The Bible tells us: "Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God."

5th commandment -DO NOT KILL

Fifth Commandment: Do Not Kill (Catholic)Exodus 20:13

Human life is Sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being."
Do I love life in all its forms?
Do I hate someone or harbored hatred in my heart?
Did I have a fight, or try to hurt someone?
Have I hurt someone’s reputation by saying mean things about them?
Do I fail to control my anger or my temper?
Am I purposely mean? Do I say things to hurt people?
Do I fail to help others when they need help?
Do I fail to love my neighbor?
Have I physically harmed anyone?
Have I abused alcohol or drugs?
Did I give scandal to anyone, thereby leading them into sin?
Have I been angry or resentful?
Have I mutilated myself through any form of sterilization?
Have I knowingly caused others to sin?

What does the fifth commandment forbid?

The fifth commandment forbids murder and suicide, and also fighting, anger, hatred, revenge, drunkenness, recklessly endangering our health, mutilation, using harmful drugs, and bad example.

Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. CCC 2270

"All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them.” [1 Jn. 3:15]

“You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment." [Mt. 5:21-2] (C.C.C. # 2054)

When is it permitted to take the life of another person?
  1. If lawful authority commands it in punishment for graves crimes. Although statistics have proven that the application of the death penalty does not serve as a deterrent to crimes.
  2. In a just war. A "just war" is normally viewed as defending one's nation against an invasion. Invading another nation is rarely considered as a "just war."
  3. In self-defense in order to save one’s life, or to save the life of another who is unjustly attacked.

Is it permitted to take one’s own life?
No. Suicide is a grave sin. We have no dominion over our own life.

What is forbidden by this Commandment?
1. It is forbidden unjustly to take the life of a human being.

2. It is forbidden to take the life of an unborn child.

Intentional euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. (C.C.C. # 2324)

ASH WEDNESDAY

Video: The Meaning of Ash Wednesday

Directions: Watch the video and fill in the blanks.

Even though so many Catholics go to Mass on Ash Wednesday, it is not a Holy Day of ____________________.
Ash Wednesday marks the first day of the forty day period leading up to _______________, but if you were to actually count them you would find that there are actually _____ days during the season of Lent. This is because we don’t count _______________ as a part of the forty days of Lent. This day, the Lord’s Day, is a celebration of the Resurrection and new life and therefore not a day for fasting.
Why do we wear ashes on Ash Wednesday?
When we receive the ashes we hear “Remember that you are __________, and to __________ you shall return.” This is to help us recognize that all we have is a __________ from God.
Ashes were a sign of ____________________ in the Old Testament. In the early Church, the Order of _______________ wore ashes as a sign of their penance. In a similar way, John the _______________ called for repentance and baptism in preparation for the Kingdom of God. This is why we may also hear the words “Turn away from __________ and be faithful to the Gospel” when we receive the ashes on our foreheads.

Directions: In the space below, write the name of the thing(s) you intend to give up (or
add) as your Lenten commitment this year. Post this paper somewhere important as a
reminder of this commitment.
